Resolution of problems through the rule of false position: a historical study

Over the centuries, arithmetic methods had been employed in problem-solving (among them, those requiring the analysis and solution of a linear equation for their solving). However, with the emergence of algebra, algebraic methods gradually replaced arithmetic ones to the point of relegating the latter to mere methods of approximation. This is the case of the false position rule, which was employed until the XVIII century. It might be interesting to analyse the evolution of such method within historic texts, focusing particularly on the causes of its disappearance as well as on the consequences which this may bring to the teaching context.
