En Mesopotamia se desarrollaron las matemáticas desde el inicio de la primera cultura sumeria. Junto a la escritura cuneiforme apareció un sistema de numeración de base sexagesimal. Los escribas del primer Imperio babilónico, además de las operaciones aritméticas elementales, calcularon raíces cuadradas y cúbicas, establecieron relaciones trigonométricas en triángulos rectángulos y resolvieron ecuaciones algebraicas lineales y cuadráticas. En menor proporción consideraron algunos tratamientos geométricos en triángulos, trapecios, circunferencia y círculo.

Mathematics are developped in Mesopotamia from the beginning of the first sumerian culture. Together with the cuneiform writting, a sexagesimal numerals system arised. Apart from basic arithmetic operations, the scribes of the first Babilonical empire knew how to calculate square and cubil roots, discovered trigonometric relations of rectangle triangles, and solved linea and quadratic equations. In a lesser extent they considered some geometric treatments, in triangles, trapezoids, circunferences and circles.
